Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Kuzman.
Christopher, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
In 2015, I decided to buy a DJI camera-drone on a whim and very quickly learned that I could make some really cool videos with it. Like many others, I started making aerial videos from the footage I got when I traveled. This ignited an obsession for filming and editing videos. I started learning how to use DSLR’s because I wanted to be able to film indoor stuff, which got me curious about photography. I started to take pictures of random stuff like landscapes, my girlfriend, clouds…
A few people asked me to take their graduation pictures, then I started doing some simple video work for my boss, and then pretty quickly people I didn’t even know started reaching out to me for pro photo/video work. It took me a long time to identify as a professional photographer/videographer. Eventually, I realized that I could replace my day job income with just photo/video work, and I just kind of slowly filled up my schedule with freelance work. I still sometimes feel like it is ridiculous that it’s my actual full-time job, especially considering I bought my first camera 2 years ago.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I create still images and film that my clients and myself use to powerfully communicate ideas in a way that words alone cannot accomplish. I use various cameras and lenses to capture moments that happen in the physical world and use a variety of incredible software tools to take that digital information and make something that resonates with humans. I love the idea of being able to affect people’s minds and change the way they view the world. I am inspired by anything that produces a powerful emotional response in people.
The reason I started creating art is because of art that other people made, so I love the idea of being able to inspire others to create art, but recently, I’ve been really motivated to inspire others to appreciate different aspects of life on Earth. If I can get someone to experience gratitude for their life a tiny bit more or appreciate the beauty that exists everywhere or enjoy the present moment just a little bit more, I feel like I’ve done a good job. I love working with people and businesses that associate themselves with positivity and optimism. When it comes to “why my art is different or whatever,” sometimes, I don’t know exactly why people should like my art, I just find myself starting to work, and then I stop when I’m done.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
If I’m able to create things that I believe make a positive difference, I feel successful. I used to want people to think I’m “talented” or whatever. Now, I want people to actually feel different about the world, and ideally go out and act on their newly found perspective. That is essential to me at this point. I can’t say that I’ve achieved it at the level that I would like, but I’m getting there.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can see a lot of my stuff on my website. I upload pretty regularly to Instagram, just follow me. I also share some of my videos on Facebook – Chris Kuzman. Hit me up!
