Check out Brooke Magee’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Magee.

Brooke, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
From a very young age, I had a creative entrepreneur’s heart. I used to color on paper towels and dip it in water (to dye the water) and make my own lava lamps to sell in the yard. In high school, I found a creative outlet through graphic design, and eventually went to college to study art. In Hawaii, I got my Bachelors of Fine Arts, and for my senior project, I designed a coffee table book of the north shore of Oahu. I filled its pages with my images of surfers and waves, each chapter a different of my favorite beaches. I think this is the moment I really connected with photography. When I moved to Arizona, I discovered a love for portrait photography and spent my free time educating myself with every course I could get my hands on. Gradually, I found my peace through photographing weddings.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Some people think I just sell photos, but I don’t. I freeze time and sell memories. A wedding only lasts a day, but with a photographer, you get to look back and relive the day for a lifetime. I am driven to continue to grow and increase my knowledge for this very reason — ensuring my couples will have photos to look back on that tells their particular love story. I want them to look at their albums and remember the day they married this person and the joy and excitement they felt. When people see my work, I want them to recognize genuine emotions and a couple who are head over heels for one another. So many of my couples express that they “are awkward in front of a camera.” Through a personalized posing experience, my mission is to make them feel beautiful and capture their unique connection as a couple.

How can artists connect with other artists?
We are really blessed to be a part of such a welcoming industry if we allow ourselves, as there are a million opportunities to make friends. The following are some of my suggestions for developing relationships, especially for photographers.

1. Participate in styled shoots, if for no other reason to become closer with other photographers and meet vendors.

2. Sit down for lunch with other pros to chat and don’t even talk about the industry.

3. Find a mentor, someone who will guide you through it all. This can open your mind and build your confidence in your craft. We can all use friends in the industry that lift us up, and they often even give us opportunities.

4. Be pleasant to work with, the referrals will start coming in.

5. Sessions are such a great opportunity because you have an hour with a couple and the chance to become friends with them!

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My work is most easily accessible on my Instagram where I post frequently. You can learn more about my work and my story on my website. If you like my work, a kind email always goes a long way.
