Check Out Brittany Whiting’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Whiting.

Brittany, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and professionally.
I have a niece, that as a baby absolutely loved wearing turbans and so it was my sister that first started the push toward the turban making business. I measured every toddler and baby’s head. I knew to make up average sizes. Then I would cut out the fabric, my sister would serge, and my mom would do the final stitching. As we created this relay of making turbans, it also created a fun sisterhood amongst us for we truly are blessed, even with a side of crazy.

As our Arizona summer quickly approached, mine and my sister’s kids wanted to play outside in the water as much as possible, thus making sunscreen a necessary demand. Have you ever tried putting sunscreen on a baby’s head, or even a toddler’s with fine hair? I’ll spare you the details but it can be a nightmare to put on and take off, plus half the time sunscreen leaves that pasty white look on their head.

With this in mind, I took Sew Crazy Blessed to the next level, with my mom’s seamstress help, and I opened up shop with swim turbans. I wanted to help all those parents who have kiddos like mine that absolutely love to be in the water. Our UV 50 swim fabric is a more than efficient way to cover and protect little heads from burning or to even skip the battle of sunscreened hair. Plus accessorizing a swimsuit made it that much more fun to make our version of a swim cap.

We’d love to hear more about your brand. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Swim turbans are our version of a cute and modified swim cap.

It’s, and your little one loves to be outside playing in the water, but sunscreen in the hair isn’t the easiest to put on or is it the cutest, and we all know sunscreen is a must when playing long term outside in the water. So to help protect your little one’s head, we have made swim turbans.

We prefer ours sewn! Unlike a lot of other companies, we do not use glue. Glue isn’t water soluble and doesn’t hold as long as stitches, so I’m proud to say we sew and hand stitch every turban. Our swim turbans are made out of swim material designed to get wet, AND they are UV 50!

Our goal is to help protect those sweet little noggins while keeping them looking cute. From local indoor pools to sandy beach waves, or to sprinkler run-throughs, we want to be apart of the adventure with our swim turbans.

How can artists and creatives connect with other creative professionals?
It definitely can be a long and long road. When I was first starting up a business, I tried to talk to anyone and everyone I knew that had started up their own small business. One thing I’ve tried to do as a shop owner is to get out of the bubble of ‘me and my shop’ and focus on other shops. At local boutiques, I love to sit and chit chat with other vendors, ask their advice, and hear their stories. Since I’m a local small business owner, I likewise try to shop and do the same to support my fellow small shop owners. I have come to find a lot of good friends through these channels. I feel like the more you get to know other shops or businesses it can help you in the long run, for it has been such a fun and supportive community with those that I do know.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Sew Crazy Blessed can be accessed through many ways; Etsy, Facebook, and Instagram.

Follows and likes are always appreciated on our Sew Crazy Blessed Instagram page. There you can see our feed of the newest and latest styles along with the adventures of many of our customers. There is also a link on our Instagram page that goes directly to our Etsy page, which is our main site.

For all the locals here in the metropolitan area of Phoenix, I also have a display at Downeast Home and Clothing in Gilbert. I also participate in a few local and seasonal boutiques, which are always a fun time to support local vendors.
