Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Maura.
Ashley, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Hello! I am the photographer behind Twomermaids Photography. I have been doing photography for a little over six years now. I am a mom to two beautiful (and crazy) little mermaid babies (thats where the name comes from!) I am a #wifey to a U.S. Marine turned Deputy, and a lover of all things “The Office” related. I practically live on the river all summer, and the rest of the year I’m in leggings and a mom bun. I have a serious case of RBF. I promise I’m not mean, thats just my face. I LOVE tattoos, Everything about them. The story they tell, the colors, the meaning, just everything about ink I can’t get enough! Photography is my passion; every day I wake up and try to figure out what I can document that day. What joy I can grab and lock into a beautiful picture for eternity. My main goal with photography is to capture connections. I want you to feel your emotions pour through the image. I want to make you; the client overjoyed with your images. That is the most important thing for me.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am a natural light photographer that loves real raw emotions. I am obsessed with capturing the perfect sun flares, and I love golden images. My family is my main reason why I do what I do. I wanted to perfect my craft to get gorgeous images of my family to last forever. I want my children to have many many pictures of their grandparents and parents when they are older to show their kids. My goal is to get gorgeous images in a short, efficient time frame. Let’s be honest; kids hate pictures lol so learning how to pull emotions out of people quickly has really been a huge lifesaver for me. It keeps my client’s families looking forward to sessions with me instead of the ever dreading husband groaning about pictures. Being able to have them say “This gallery is amazing and it was so efficient and amazing my kids said they would do more sessions with you!” It makes my day.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
It’s tough being an artist in the digital media era. Having to protect your rights to the image as much as possible. Having to see the image you spent hours editing with a crappy social media filter slapped on it. It’s all too frustrating to see that. Or to see people posting your work all over and not a tiny mention of you at all anywhere. The biggest tip I have for anyone out there that wants to make their photographer work hard for them, CREDIT YOUR PHOTOGRAPHERS. Always. That tiny tag means so much to the photographer.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Twomermaids Photography has been featured in multiple magazines, but the biggest way to find my work is through my website or Instagram.
