Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Weyhrich.
Andrew, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Growing up, especially in my teen years, I was obsessed with movies. I loved the adventure and fantasy, but also became very interested in the visual effects side of film. It amazed me how small sets in Hollywood were transformed into vast worlds with the clever use of paint and photography, and I wanted to learn how it was done.
I never really followed up on the visual effects interest seriously and spent much of my 20’s living and traveling overseas. It was on my adventures that I developed an interest in photography as well as architectural design. Being on the road it was difficult to learn as much about these topics as I wanted to, and around my 30th birthday I decided to head back to school.
While deciding what it was I wanted to get a degree in I remembered my love of visual effects and thought it would be a unique experience to combine that interest with photography and design. I found Flashpoint Chicago, formally Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy, and enrolled in their animation and visual effects program.
While at Flashpoint I found that I not only had an interest in visual effects, but also in graphic design and motion graphics. I graduated with an associate in animation and visual effects and a bachelor’s of science in digital art.
In March of this year I moved to Scottsdale with my fiancé to begin the next chapter in our lives and my design career.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Over the past few years I have been focused on creating visual effects and concept art for any film project that comes across my path. I have really enjoyed creating 3D models of sets as well. I love being able to add that little something to shots to make them come alive to the director’s vision. For many of these projects I have used the Adobe Suite as well as Maya, Nuke, and Houdini,
Much of my motion graphics work has been animating static logos and creating short commercial pieces. I still have a love of animation and add 3D assets into my 2D work when I can. It is amazing to see simple shapes become something mesmerizing and deep with only a few slight moves on the screen.
As of late I have been trying to get back to doing some static design work. By piecing together photographs I have taken around the world I have created places that only exist in my dreams. I have also been taking outlines of structures, both natural and manmade to create images that are visually sarcastic.
Moving to Arizona has been a fantastic boost to my creativity and drive to design. The natural landscapes out here alone are enough to inspire people to get in touch with their creativity. There is a kind of magical feeling in the West that I never felt living much of my life in the corn fields of the Midwest.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
The most important advice that I was given in my schooling was to be totally open to constructive criticism. Before I learned to take others thoughts and opinions on board my work was getting stagnant and my creativity started to falter. Once I opened up to the thoughts of others I began to see my work from a different angle and many pieces were greatly improved. Critiques also help to get new ideas going for other projects.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Right now much of my work can be found on,
