Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Meza.
Andrew, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am from Riverside CA, but moved out to Iowa after high school. From there I started to create my style from looking at a lot of tattoo art and my love for cartoons. I tried to incorporate the old style of cartoons like the Looney Toons and a lot of Tom and Jerry. I eventually went to college in Iowa and took a graphic design course there were I found my love for design and illustrations.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
Throughout my time in college I came to look at many different styles and forms of art. I learned about Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, they became my favorite artist and my inspiration. In college I also discovered a love for graffiti and street art. In that realm of things there my inspirations were Shepard Fairey and Kaws. In the last few years I’ve just been having fun with making my art and doing it for myself. I’m just glad everyone’s enjoying it and I never thought it would ever get me to this point.
What I make is a little confusing, best way I can break it down is, I create cartoon characters with a lot of influence from pop art and street art. My message in my art is don’t take everything for face value, everything isn’t always as it seems.
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think conditions have improved as there is more demand for artist and an artist has so many more opportunities than they did before. I have had the opportunity to do a lot here and meet a lot of other great artist in the short amount of time since I moved here. I am glad to be a part of such a great community of artist here. I think the best way to help artist is to continue the support of art walks and me personally I would love to see more murals, and public art.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
As of right now Instagram is the best place to find my work and you can find it at @andym.designs. As of right now liking my work is good enough. In the future I do plan on making shirts and stickers, I have had a lot of requests and think they would be the next best thing.
