Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Weaver.
Amy, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always been an art lover, focusing on advanced techniques classes in high school and then taking courses in college and afterwards for fun. As many people tend to focus on the monetary aspects of life, I was encouraged to find a “real” job, or I’d struggle financially for the rest of my life. I listened and got my degree in a more “acceptable” field, only honoring my love of art as a hobby or side hustle.
Fast forward to about eight years ago: bored and frustrated with the lack of art and creativity in my life, I took up photography. Using the art principles I’d learned when drawing, painting and crafting, I honed my capture skills. Teaching myself the technicalities of a camera and Photoshop was quite a bit harder! Luckily, there’s an endless supply of information found online, in photography classes and books, through friends and mentors. With pure determination, I learned the ins and outs of natural light photography.
It’s so much fun to capture those fleeting moments and bring smiles to people’s faces. Photography gives me an opportunity to make people happy and be creative all at once.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I try to capture the essence and joy of a family through photographs in natural light and scenes away from a photo studio. I want my images to be a glimpse into real life – not an overly edited or unrealistic version of it. Each family brings their own mood and story to the shoot, and while I tend towards brighter, crisp photos, I try to honor the light and story of those in front of my camera.
The stereotype of a starving artist scares away many potentially talented artists from pursuing art – any advice or thoughts about how to deal with the financial concerns an aspiring artist might be concerned about?
My artwork is definitely a side job – for now! I plan to one day do photography full time, but photography equipment is expensive! I’m building my portfolio, skill set and gear for when I take my art full-time.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Aside from my website – where I share my portfolio, mini specials and occasionally blog about a range of topics – I’m also on social media as painted ponies. My personal/landscape photography is on IG as well @azamyw
