Check out Abel Magana’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abel Magana.

Abel, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m 30 years old. For majority of my life, I have always been interested in and creating different types of art mediums. I finally took a major invested interest in my freshmen year of college when I started working at the photo lab at Glendale Community College. I always had a fascination with photography and submersing myself in the area, opened me up to making it a permanent and essential part of my life. Aside from photography, I also fill my time with videography and music, being in a local band called Foxhound with my best friends.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I started with photography, and while I still spend majority of my time with that, I also started dabbling with videography, finding a new passion in a similar field. During my time taking photos and video, I have created a few music videos, behind the scene videos, and just random b-roll scenic footage. My favorite photography style to shoot is candid random shots. I love capturing the moment in its most genuine feel. I’ll be at a party or show and just point, shoot, capture the life around me. People are shown having fun and not “acting” for the camera.

Like I mentioned before, I am also in a band called Foxhound. I play guitar and back-up vocals/screams. Before you ask what kind of music we play, which is such a difficult question to answer – it’d be best described as indie post rock? We have several influences and have not really stuck with a certain genre. We write what sounds good to us and make it the best we can. Whether it be my photos/videos/music that people experience, I want to leave them with the feeling of being moved.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
Social media plays a big part in being an artist during this day and age. It’s made it easier for an artist to get their work out there. Using the right hashtag could present your art to a number of random people, and expand your presence worldwide. I always think how people years ago got exposure and known without the help of social media. But with this, also brings the difficulty of an over saturated market. Everyone has their own style which adds variety but can also cause others to be overlooked and even unmotivated, which I’ve personally felt at times. I have several friends who do photography and they put out such amazing work and it does sometimes discourage me to move forward. It’s a double-edged sword of inspiration and intimidation. Websites like this are such a powerful resource that help artists be known, while not overshadowing talent.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
