Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbi Caballero.
Abbi, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
For as long as I can remember, art has been the air that I breathe. As a young child, I delighted in drawing pictures, making crafts, and playing several instruments. I would even wake up at 5:30 AM to watch re-runs of The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross on PBS. In my teenage years, while my artistic endeavors centered mainly around illustration and painting, I also began to fall in love with social media and technology. I didn’t make the connection then, but the light bulb went off one day while I was taking a photo on my iPhone. I realized that I loved being able to capture the beauty of life around and me and then use my knowledge and skills of art, along with the tools of technology, to express that beauty to others.
Today that includes doing photo shoots, album covers, and promotional social media content for local artists, as well as directing, filming and editing music videos. When I’m not shooting, editing, or dreaming big with other artists, you’ll most likely find me scrolling through Instagram on my phone, keeping in touch with the culture, in search of the next bit of inspiration. I seemingly have never been able to get enough of art.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I am primarily a photographer, but I also create graphic content and illustrative work. I enjoy capturing photos of the beauty around me — colors, people, nature, architecture, fashion. There are a lot of magnificent things around us that we tend to take for granted, so I make it my mission to take photos in a way that highlights these things that I’m thankful for. Examples of this are settings with vibrant colors, such as gardens or sunsets, highlighting the beauty of our natural world and the effortless harmony between the hues in it. The mess that a dinner leaves on a table is a beautiful thing to me that I’ve captured several times before because it’s evidence that human beings had gathered and enjoyed a meal together. Buildings and other structures can be fun to photograph, keeping in mind all of the hands that came together to be able to build it, allowing humans to flourish inside. I hope that when people see my photographs, they are inspired to take a stance of gratitude for creation and the beautiful world we live in.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
Success for me is working on a piece for hours, days, sometimes weeks, and watching people react to it when it’s complete. As artists, we have been given the gift of creation, and with that in mind, it’s important for us to understand that our art creates a huge impact on those around us. We can improve moods, spark imagination, and feed inspiration to others. It’s important to keep creating!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
For the time being my work can be found on VSCO at vsco.co/gigashoots and on Instagram at instagram.com/gigashoots. I hope to launch my website in the near future, where you will be able to schedule shoots with me, buy prints, and keep up with any projects I’m working on!
