Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Ancheta.
Aaron, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I am a comic artist and illustrator. I lived half my life in Southern California and the latter half here in Arizona. I graduated from the University of Arizona in the VISCOM program.
I am extremely introverted, non-confrontational and to a certain degree lazy.
My most prolific work that I’ve done is being an assistant artist for the sixth volume of Scott Pilgrim graphic novel series.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do? Why? And what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I primarily make illustrations and comics digitally in Adobe Photoshop or alternatively, ClipStudioPaint.
Why? Boredom and money.
I do not consider myself a “fine artist” by any means, so the message really depends on the subject matter of the work in question, and in my case, it can be surface level.
If there is a message I’m trying to establish in any of my work, I try to make it 1) As straightforward as possible. Nothing cryptic, no pretense. And 2) As easily relatable as possible.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
While I believe changing the world through art is possible, it’s also something of a crapshoot.
Unless you’re banging someone over the head with a message, they can interpret a work any way they want. I mean there was that one case a few years back where somebody thought John Carpenter’s “They Live” was about the Jews.
In terms of real-life events affecting my work, it really depends. I’ve yet to do anything explicitly sociopolitical, I’ve so far just tried to stick to more “down to earth” / intimate human interaction.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
Online on Instagram.
I also sell my work in print at comic and anime conventions.
The most important project I’m working on is a webcomic called “Achtung: Magical Girl Corps” that I intend to continue updating for the foreseeable future. It can be found on the website Line Webtoon.
