We’re looking forward to introducing you to Benny James. Check out our conversation below.
Benny, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A normal day for me usually starts with coffee, massive amounts of coffee. Then, if I have a gig, whether it’s teaching a dance lesson, performing magic at a party or working with a production company on a new project, I tackle it head on.
If it’s a day with no gigs, I’m typically at home, studying the newest magic tricks, writing scripts or just playing LEGOs and video games with my family. Sometime, we’ll go out swimming or bowling, just to get out of the house.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Benny James and I am a Acto-Magi-Dance-Ator. (That’s what my wife calls me.) Basically, I’m an Actor, a Magician, a Dance Teacher and a Content Creator. I work with private individuals and companies and I own two businesses, “Benny.fits of Dance” and our social network “ThatGeekFamily”
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
My relationship with my wife. She has always believed in me from the start and hasn’t stopped. Even when I couldn’t believe in myself, she has never doubted what I am capable of. And my daughter has been there to remind me to always be the best version of myself.
Having those two in my life like that has made me who I am today.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every second Tuesday. (laughs) I think everybody has that moment when you want to give up, sometimes more than once.
And, I think for people in the entertainment field, there is always rejection, there is always people telling you “you’re not enough” and finding ways to keep you down.
But, I always remember Rocky, because it doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked to the mat, it only matters how many times you get back up.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that old saying, “Money doesn’t buy happiness”
This saying is bogus.
Money can provide you with food, shelter, clothing, electricity, water, basic human necessities as well as travel, books, education, etc. Money can not only allow you to feed the body, but to feed the mind and the soul. So, yes, money CAN buy happiness. But, money is a tool, and like any tool, must be used wisely. Otherwise, it can be a detriment to your life.
So, the saying should be, “Money can’t REPLACE happiness”
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Teaching my kid to be a successful adult.
