Art & Life with Sydney Alexis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Alexis.

Sydney, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I have been doing photography since I was 10 years old. It has always been the art medium I feel that best describes me. I grew up in Gilbert, Arizona, and have had the privilege to move around a bit with the help of my photography. I honestly could not ever see myself doing it, and that’s how I know I am meant to do it for the rest of my life. I feel 100% myself behind the camera-nearly free.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I mainly shoot portraits of other people for either clientele work, seniors, or personal enjoyment.

My set I use is pretty standard (Canon 6D and 28 mm f/2.8), but I truly believe if you’re an artist you’ll always find a way to make content with what you have.

I do this because it’s my passion, and it always has been. I never really have a message through my photos unless I am shooting editorial or a story-based idea. I find it very important to be organic with every shot to keep not only the viewers interested, but yourself.

Photography can sometimes feel like a big fail since everyone has a camera nowadays. That’s why I find it so important to keep variety in the content I push out. People pay attention when you’re different and yourself.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Being an artist can be lonely in a sense, but I find that completely useful. It gives you time to manifest and push yourself based off the content you see on a daily basis on social media. I truly believe you can make the best out of each situation life puts you in, and as an artist, going through creative ruts can be useful even if you feel like you’re failing. If you use the ruts in a positive sense and recalibrate your energy, it’s quite refreshing. I always ask for people’s opinions on my work because I genuinely want to see if I am improving from an outside perspective.

If artists are looking to connect with locals (no matter where they are), a great safe place is The Hub. It is a secured website that is strictly for people like photographers, models, and stylists of any kind. It helps you connect with people in any city, so no matter where you go in the world you can find other REAL people to connect with.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I mainly just post my photos on my Instagram (@sydney_alexis3), my website is in the process of being built and will not be released publicly for a while. I want it to be perfect and a platform I am content with.

People can support my work just by being active and telling me their raw opinions. I really appreciate corrective criticism and positive vibes. I find it so important to push myself on multiple levels, otherwise I feel like I’m slipping past my visions.
