Art & Life with Spencer Routson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spencer Routson.

Spencer, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I was in high school I was very interested in photography and was very much involved with the yearbook and other classes involving digital media. While I was in high school I was inspired by my photo teacher who always taught us to get out and enjoy nature and find beauty where not many could see it, to pick up photography. After graduating high school, I served an LDS mission in Colombia for two years after which I bought my first camera and started doing photo shoots with my friends and anyone who would hire me. Since then, I have created a decent following on Instagram because I try and get out every day and create something new. I love capturing the beauty of individuals and leave each photo shoot with a new friend.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I teach High School Photography half time at Lehi High School and the rest of my time is filled with my own photography. I try and meet new people every day and make a post every day with a different caption that describes my life or an uplifting quote of some sort. I don’t necessarily create my art to inspire others. I do it because I have this artistic itch that if I am not creating I am not progressing. So, I guess I try to inspire progression.
I hope that from looking at my art you can see individuals and not just pretty faces. Each person I have taken pictures of has become a friend and I hope they know they can always count on me.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
Given everything that is going on in the world today, I do not believe that the role of artists has changed. Every artist has different goals, beliefs and views on politics and religion. The reason I create is for myself. I am glad that some people benefit from my work and appreciate it but I don’t believe I have a duty to inspire others. That being said, I am affected by local, national or international events and it may show in my art. It may show in the captions on the pictures I post, or the overall mood of the picture. However, affected I am, I will still want to create new and better content than before.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a website which is www.spencerryanphoto.com or you can find me on Instagram @spencerryanphoto. If you know of anyone looking for a wedding/event/family photographer please refer them to my page.
