Today we’d like to introduce you to SkRUFF ZONA.
SkRUFF, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I don’t find my story to be unique; I see my story as compassion and persistence. Before I was rapping or in a studio setting, I was playing football, and I would help my dad DJ parties until I eventually started at age 6. My sister and two cousins were my reason to pick up a pen and pad, around third grade (9 years old). Jr high school, was mainly sports until I went to high school and got involved in the magnet programs. I was apart of the radio department, where I would create prerecorded and live shows, which would have little songs me and a classmate would create. I was a 3 sports athlete in high school. I didn’t record my song “Smoke Break” with my brother, business partner, producer/engineer (Earth Yarb) in 2012, coming back and forth from college in Langston, Ok. Two years later in 2014, I bought my first USB microphone in Oklahoma city, I was staying at my best friends house and recorded in his closet, while he worked. I finally moved back home in 2015, set up my home studio, and I’ve been cranking out music ever since I came back home to the West side of Phoenix.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a rapper, and sometimes I may help produce beats. But my main focus is to have fun while I create music. I want the consumers of my music to have audio they can listen to on a late night drive clearing their head, or if they’re getting ready to go party. I’m not really the club type. I rather have a kickback with solid folks. Food, beer, liquor, weed, woman and good vibes with no interruptions, that’s bliss! Folks should be able to find a feel-good vibe from my music, especially if their favorite artist is Curren$y, Wiz Khalifa, Smoke DZA, Casey Veggies, etc.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Promoters booking artist based off of pay to play, versus handpicking artists based off of musical content that would fit the said show, crowd draw (would he/she appeal to the crowd I’m trying to bring in?) Can this artist deliver a great show?
Marketing is another thing that hurts artists also. Most artist can afford to market, most artists don’t know how to market.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
