Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaelynn Dalton.
Shaelynn, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I don’t think my story is very unique. I have been utilizing creative outlets my entire life. Drawing pictures for my friends to color, painting made up Chinese character tattoos on my barbies, dressing up my siblings and playing art director and photographer for Photoshoots, creating my own fashion magazines on the back of my dad’s outdated letterhead, and ripping up my clothes and turning them into new pieces. I have never NOT been creating. I didn’t formalize it until 2013 when I finally decided on a graphic design degree after spending three years on generals and electives. Three years later, an internship at Johnson & Johnson NYC while pregnant, a newborn baby, and massive BFA final show later, I received my BFA in graphic design from BYU. Shortly after that, I received an iPad pro and apple pencil as a gift and rediscovered my love of drawing and quickly turned the hobby into a side hustle.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I make everything. I paint, I create logos, photography, videos, custom illustrations, cookbook design, children’s books drawings…you name it. I have been commissioned for too many things to mention. But I think I was most likely referred to you guys through my custom illustrations. I’ve got to be honest though, I don’t have a particular message or inspiration for them. I just enjoy drawing people, and it’s pretty cool that people enjoy me drawing them. It’s a symbiotic relationship. Customers supply me with subject matter to draw and I supply them with a unique piece of home decor. And I also get paid. I have no complaints.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Network. Send messages. Engage.
Search for your people and you will find them.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
