Art & Life with Serena Nicolle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Nicolle.

Serena, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Music has always had a special place in my heart. It wasn’t until 6th grade that I knew where it could take me. I did my first solo at a talent show and the reaction I got from family and friends and people I didn’t even know will stick with me forever. In high school I went through some tough times as most teenagers do. I took a song writing class and writing became my outlet. When I started showing people my songs, I didn’t realize how it would connect to others on a personal level. Letting people know they aren’t alone is important and I try to do that through the music I create.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I sing but I also write my own song. Singer/songwriter is what I would identify as. I write from personal experiences, what I’ve seen others and loved ones go through, and just whatever inspires me. When I feel inspired I will usually go to my piano first and start playing chords and writing lyrics at the same time. Every songwriter is different, but this is how I usually do it. Sometimes I go to the guitar first but piano was the first instrument I learn so that what I feel most comfortable with. When writing and performing my music I want people to have an emotional connection with me and the music. Many people feel like they are the only ones going through tough times and may feel isolated. I want them to know that there are others who have felt the same way or have gone through similar situations. Everything I write doesn’t just pop out of thin air. It takes time for me because I like to write from the bottom of my heart and I love doing it.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
What seems to cost the most while pursuing my music and performing live has got to be the gear. From microphones to the sound board to in-ears, it definitely adds up. I do have a part-time job and the money I get from there is what I use to pay bills, eat, clothing, etc. The money that I make, I decided, it needs to be used specifically for things that will help my music career like distribution costs, merchandise, monitors etc. I try to keep those monies separate and it helps me spend less. I am very lucky that I have the support of my parents because they helped me get on my feet in the music industry. They have always been there for me whether it is financially or emotionally. They are the best!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can find my music on Spotify if they search Silver Lining which is my 5 song EP. You can find me on pretty much any digital music platform like Google Play, Apple Music, iTunes, etc. If you would like to see me perform live, go to www.serenanicollemusic.com/events and the calendar will tell you all the places I am performing including time and date and address of location.
