Today we’d like to introduce you to Seda Pias.
Seda, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’d say my story as an artist started when I was a kid. I’ve really always been interested in art, and that’s something that has stuck with me my whole life. Throughout elementary school, music and art classes were always my favorites. Even when we would do something artistic for classes that weren’t art related, I’d go all out on the creative part of it. It wasn’t really until junior high when I really started to do something with all my pent up artistic energy. I joined art and ceramics and was gifted a point and shoot camera from one of my uncles, so I was drawing, making pottery and have my first experiments with photography. My art teacher (who was so awesome!) was also the yearbook advisor, and she encouraged me to join, and that was kind of my first introduction to graphic design! In high school I continued on with yearbook, photography and dived into graphic design classes and that eventually lead me to where I am now, which is an almost-graduate with a BFA in Graphic Design!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Currently, I was two main kinds of art that I do. One is the graphic design stuff that I do. I create stuff like branding, rebranding, making flyers, posters, infographics, logos, social media graphics; basically anything typography, layout design or illustration related! My favorite thing about design is presenting something in a way that interests people and makes them ask questions about the business or issue that the design is about. I’m really inspired by the challenge of design. Since designers always work with clients, we have constraints to what we can do based on the clients wants, needs and budgets so it can definitely be challenging to make something that both you and the client are happy with, but that’s the fun part! The other kind of art that I’ve been doing recently is making enamel pins and other small accessories for my online shop called The Monstur Plaza! This shop is shamelessly inspired by kpop, which is Korean pop music. Music is generally one of my biggest inspirations, and this shop is a way for me to really express that. It’s also a place where I have full control of what I’m creating! I guess something I’d like people to take away from my work in my shop is just to keep an open mind. Lots of people hear kpop and immediately dismiss it, but I think as a general life lesson it’s important to keep an open mind to things we may be prejudiced against until we give it a chance and make our own judgments!
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I definitely think being an artist can be lonely and it’s hard to deal with that feeling of overwhelming aloneness but lucky for us, there are tons of other artists that experience those same feelings and can help us work through them! Honestly, the best way to connect with other artists is to just put in the effort. With social media, we have the world at our fingertips, so I’d just say to make the effort to interact with other artists. Comment on their work, like their posts, share their work if you like it, message them, just try and make those connections. I have artist friends all over the world that I met and became friends with just by reaching out to them!
