Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Maximin.
Sammy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
For as long as I can remember, music has been my life. When I was 6 years old, I had a vision I made the world dance and since that moment, I’ve been following my calling. I grew up in church, went to prep school, and dedicated all of my years as a teen to music.
In a way, I’ve lived a very unique life. It’s almost as though every day was preparation for the live I live now. I’ve always been the odd one out and my fashion sense doesn’t help very much. I like think that my music is a reflection of me and that’s how most people would classify my sound. “It’s Sammy” – which basically means we have no idea what genre this is, but it sounds like Sammy.
And that’s been my story. Me pursuing a life I believe was preordained and navigating through the world’s reaction.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I sing, rap, write, and produce all of my music. The beats are made by me and so is the recording. In a way, I’m kind of like my own band. My sound is electronic with a blend of live instruments. I love using the sounds around me. Sometimes I’ll record a room full of people talking on my phone, send it to my computer, and make a beat out of it.
When it comes to music, I’m always searching and exploring. All of my material comes from real life experiences and the things I feel. Growing up, I was a really sensitive kid and I’ve just learned how to channel all of my emotions into music. For me, nothing else is more therapeutic. I usually run 5 miles a day listening to the music I’m creating. And for some reason, that’s when all the pieces come together.
I genuinely love the life I live and I want to share it. All of my hope, my faith, my energy – I believe it’s important to share with the world. I know I’m here for a reason and it’s my mission every day to brighten the world, even if it’s through a silly snapchat of my day. I want to show people it’s possible.
It’s possible to be young and pursue your dream. It’s possible to find the love of your life, to take control of your life and believe that everything happening to us and around us is for a reason. There’s a bigger plan than our own and that’s where I see God. I know he loves me. And that gives me hope.
In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Great question! My honest answer is simply work ethic. I can’t tell you how many talented artists I run into on a daily basis. People whose voice blow me out of the water and who can play the piano better than I could ever dream of.
But where I beat em…. My work ethic. I’m the guy who’s working when everyone else is sleeping, partying, or whatever the “excuse” may be. My entire life is dedicated to my craft. And especially nowadays, we live in a microwave society. Where people want results right now. They want the fame right now. They want a million followers right now. But most don’t realize, this thing is a journey. You don’t start today and get there next week. It takes time and There are no days off. If I’m not creating, I’m promoting, if I’m not promoting, I’m filming a video, if I’m not doing that, I’m performing. There’s always something going on and I don’t think a lot of artists realize the momentum is on you.
It’s your job to wake up every day and keep the ball rolling and engage people, while obtaining more followers. The simple word for all of this is GRIND. When you put grind next to talent, your result is Superstar. That’s it! Maybe it’s just me who believes this, but you have to put in the work. There’s no easy way around it. So please if you’re out there and you’ve been going at it for years – KEEP GOING. Don’t stop. Use the challenges as building blocks to keep going. And remember, the momentum is all on you!!! You set the tone.
You got this!
