Today we’d like to introduce you to Sammy Black.
Sammy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I was in high school, I had a little job bussing tables just to by clothes and shoes. One day Instead of hitting the mall on payday I went to Best Buy and bought a camera. At this time taking pictures for the gram was super popular, but I wasn’t very good at it & I never seemed to figure it out. So one day, I started recording because all my photos were coming out trash. My buddy at the time was making music & I just got the idea to make a music video for him. That was my first video… it was garbage but I loved it. So I kept going. Kept researching and teaching myself new things. YouTube tutorials after YouTube tutorials until I figured it out. I always loved music. This was my way of being apart of it.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a Director & Editor. I make music videos. Mostly hiphop because that’s what I enjoy doing the most. I meet a lot of people doing this & some of those people have turned into friends. I just wanted to prove to myself that I could pay my bills doing something I loved. I just want people to know what’s possible, & that’s anything.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
Being an artist is lonely. That is something you will have to accept if you want to grow. Going to parties, chasing women, hanging with your homies… that’s cool & all but that’s not gonna make you no money or take you anywhere you need to be. If you really want to connect with people then my advice would be to tough out the lonely nights & focus on improving your craft. I have found myself in rooms with people I would never imagine being around. That’s not because I was there friend or they liked me as a person. It’s because of the work that was put in. & trust me, once people start to see you’re doing something they will be calling you just to see if you still pick up. You don’t want that fake love anyway.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I have a YouTube channel where I host a lot of my work, as well as interviews of artist, vlogs & more. You can support our channel by subscribing, liking & leaving comments. We all read the comments. You would be surprised how much a simple comment can motivate somebody to keep going.
