Art & Life with Memar Blakelee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Memar Blakelee.

Memar, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I grew up in Starkville, MS. I started singing in the church, as most southern singers do, around the age of 9. Inspired by pop an R&B artists such as Toni Braxton and Destiny’s Child, it made me want to become an artist myself. I started writing music at an early age to express myself because growing up in the south; there weren’t many people like me that I knew of. Writing was very therapeutic for me. I recorded my first song in 2017, after many years of writing. I’m continuing to grow and evolve as and singer, writer, and performer.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I create music, life, inspiration, and love. I first began by writing lyrics, and then I go into the studio to piece together the instrumentation of the song, then I go in the booth and do what I love. My art is an extension of who I am and where I’ve been in life. I never write or sing about anything I haven’t experienced or seen first hand, and that’s what makes my music relatable, fun and honest. I want people to listen to my music and feel inspired, understood and like they’ve made a new best friend.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Finances and art as an Independent artist is very tricky. It takes sacrificing. Some days you may have a choice of paying for a studio session or the utilities, and that’s absolutely horrible, but that’s how it is starting out if you don’t have a lot of money to support your artistry. I would definitely say getting all the details together for your art (prices, etc.) and saving would be an awesome idea to start.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My visual art is available on Instagram. I post the usual (video, pictures, etc.). My music can be found on all digital platforms such as Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Tidal, etc.
