Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Wilcox.
Matthew Wilcox born in January of 1984 is originally from Michigan. Art became an interest as a child when his mother introduced him to images by the old masters. As a child in the Wilcox, household imagination was encouraged, and creativity was always supported. In 2001 as a teen Wilcox relocated to Arizona with his family. At 22 he left to serve in the military as an Army Artilleryman deploying to Iraq twice and spending a total of 7 years in active service. After returning to Arizona in 2013 Wilcox found his love for art begin to evolve from a hobby to a personal and professional pursuit, Wilcox attended Yavapai College in Prescott Arizona earning an AAS in graphic design and is currently continuing his studies at Arizona State University to obtain a BFA in drawing.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My medium of choice is oil paint. For exercise, I’ll paint from life and from photos but find the most enjoyment in making images that come from my own imagination. Seeing flashes of imagined worlds and figures in my mind’s eye and to then bring them to life on a surface is the true reward for me. The back and forth of what I see in my head and what begins to develop on the canvas is magic to me. My process is an intuitive one, rarely using sketches or references to aid in my work. Painting for me is a therapeutic evacuation of uncomfortable feelings, thoughts or fears manifested as figures and faces, a temporary spiritual cleansing if you will.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
