Today we’d like to introduce you to Marsha Blumm.
Marsha, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve always been creative, but not always in a traditional way. In my 20’s I created one of a kind art wear for shops all over the country. I was the Costume Director for a traveling Repertory Theater company for several years before succumbing to the need to feed my kids consistently. After several decades of nontraditional jobs, I found my way back to art. In the 2000’s I took up watercolors and changed my life. More art resulted in an early retirement and the addition of oils. Now working with fiber has returned to my creative endeavors. So, in addition to painting in oils and watercolor, I paint and dye natural fabrics for scarfs and jackets. Some of my newest projects have been creating quilts based on my paintings. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My work is about colors. My watercolors are usually based on nature and the amazing colors in flowers, cactus, and trees. Mother Nature has a way with dramatic colors and I love to follow her lead. I have a different approach to my oils, I love to take a landscape vista and abstract them with geometric shapes and bold colors and creating amazing sunrise, sunset illusions. I want the viewer to feel like it’s a place they’ve been to, but can’t exactly say where or when a sense of Deja vu. Color should be worn as well, so a unique scarf, an artistic jacket can give anyone that little pop of color. My quilts are art to take on a picnic or snuggle on the couch with. Art that is a part of your life, not just on a wall behind the couch. I hope my creations become part of someone’s life, to be enjoyed for a long time.
Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
My advice for any artist is just go for it. If the first attempt isn’t what you want, do it again from a different angle. If you are stuck, try something completely different for a little bit. It will get the creativity flowing again.
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I show my creations at TheStore at Mesa Arts Center, a cooperative gallery. It’s a wonderful space with 42 other extremely talented members. I also show and occasionally sell my creations on my Facebook page.
