Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Henriquez.

Marissa, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’ve been drawing since I was about 3 years old, always practicing and developing my style and skills. I knew I wanted to be an artist since I was young. Once I got to ASU, I got into painting, especially with oils, and I fell more in love! Art has always been something I can come home to.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art centers around those important to me. I want to capture precious moments with friends in a way pictures can’t through the emphasis of color. I want people to feel a sense of familiarity and comfort through my art; though they might not personally know the person staring back at them, they feel welcome and loved.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success can take a while, and it can look different to everyone. I think the most essential thing to become successful as an artist is simply practice. I wouldn’t call myself successful, but as long as I keep making art, I feel that I’ll get there. For those of us who struggle with depression and other mental illnesses, it can be hard to get up and make something, but pushing through and starting is the most important part. Success will come when you feel happy creating something of your own.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
My website and my art Instagram are the best ways to see my art. Currently, I’m looking to get into more local exhibitions, so hopefully, more people will be able to see my work in person!
