Art & Life with Marco Alvarez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marco Alvarez.

Marco, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I started my journey as a photographer freshman year of high school taking a digital photography class which taught me the essentials of photography, how to use a camera, how to edit and touch up photos among other things. There I grew to love photography as a whole. It wasn’t until sophomore year I started pursuing it more as my older sister handed me her camera she doesn’t use anymore which is my trusty Nikon DSLR. I even had my first photoshoot at my high school with a friend of mine and was even invited to photograph the school’s dance concert which helped me a lot. Especially with lighting, focus and timing and if there’s one thing every photographer knows is that dance concerts are a real challenge to face. 2018 was the year I officially changed my page to my photography page. I had so many photo shoots (at least for me) with friends went to a few locations and got to use a few unique props, I’m sure I’ve spent quite a bit on them, but other than that the many different photo shoots I’ve had helping me develop my mellow/moody style thats on my page. Currently, I’m still studying to be an engineer and continue to do photography as a hobby, though I’ve had minor paid shoots I do hope that in the future my hobby can be turned into a source of income for myself while still enjoying the practice of photography for my satisfaction and enjoyment.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a Phoenix-based photographer. I do find myself working on other areas in media production such as video. I create these photos through days of planning making sure that I know what style I’m going to edit in, times of day, making sure models know when and where we can take photos. The most tedious part about the whole photoshoot is editing. There are several steps to making sure a photo is perfect. Some photos may take anywhere from an hour to three or more depending on how the photo came out and my skill as an editor. Regardless of the time it takes, taking photos and editing is my escape, its a hobby. Photography does also aid me in identifying and fully understanding emotions, others as well as my own which I think is key point in photography. Much of my inspiration for photos has to do with music. Music is a huge inspiration to my work including artists such as Eden, Oh Wonder and Rex Orange County. Each photo that I have has a song attached to it usually only I know of. My work also is dependant on the emotion I was feeling at that point in life. So the one thing people should know about my work is the base for all my photos is an emotion.

How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
Success is seeing someones face light up when they see any of my photos or getting complimented for the work that I create by others who aren’t friends or family because I get an honest opinion from them. Being humble and open-mindedness is an essential part of being a successful artist because of changing times sometimes a style may need to be adjusted or crafted differently due to programs, equipment, and ideas are rapidly changing in today’s society.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
