Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Neal.
Marc, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
My story starts with long road trips and exploring nature on the weekends. I love driving, getting away from the city, and seeing all the beautiful scenery that Arizona has to offer. In July of 2018, I took a drive up to the top of Mt Lemmon. It was a beautiful cloudy day, with a light breeze, and I decided to start taking some snapshots with my phone. The feedback I received from family and friends regarding the shots I took inspired me to invest in my first DSLR and start learning photography; the rest is history!
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Although I am always working to improve my craft and trying new things, my passion is nature and landscape photography. There is something truly serene about standing in front of a stunning natural landscape, enjoying the silence, and waiting patiently for inspiration to strike. The stillness, peace, and beauty of it all are what I hope to communicate through my photos.
One of my biggest inspirations has been the work of the late Bob Ross. A paint brush in his hands may as well have been a magic wand! Bob had a way of creating wonderful depth on canvas, in such a way that it made the viewer feel as though they might be able to walk right through one of his paintings! I enjoy challenging myself more each time I go shoot, to take some of the concepts that Mr. Ross used in his artwork and apply them to capturing landscapes.
Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I think in many ways it has become easier for art forms like photography to absolutely thrive in the digital age. I’m old enough to remember how to actually develop a roll of film in a darkroom, and it was quite a process! “Developing” photos now is so much easier and far more enjoyable for me personally. Additionally, the ability to distribute your work across multiple social media platforms is incredibly helpful and a great way to network with other artists.
I have witnessed the art scene grow in recent years in the city of Phoenix, particularly in and around downtown. I think continuing to support these communities through outreach and showcase type events is going to allow artists to grow and thrive, and I’m excited to see what the future holds!
