Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Bourdeau.
Kristen, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I got my first real camera when I was 14 years old. I started learning the ropes and took a class in high school that really helped me understand composition and balance and so forth. Over the next several years, I enjoyed photographing family, friends, and nature as a hobby. In 2016 I started dating my boyfriend who is in a local band, and eventually ended up bringing my camera to one of his shows. That was when I fell in love with concert photography. I have always loved a challenge, and concert photography is definitely one of them. You have constantly moving subjects with unpredictable, dynamic lighting effects. Since then, I’ve expanded my range of photography. I love capturing moments from new perspectives and strive to create genuine connection through my images.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
Like I said before, I love capturing moments from new perspectives, and strive to create genuine connection through my images. Photography can connect us with others around the globe. It opens our eyes to places we’ve never been before, and things we’ve never seen; or, it helps us to see the mundane in a new and beautiful way. With concert photography specifically, it is always my goal to capture the energy and excitement of the show in a way that engages others and draws them in, making them want to be a part of it.
What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe the role each artist plays varies from person to person. Some create art as an extension of their personality, others to create beauty and aestheticism, and others such as myself to create a sense of connection. My biggest concern is that we as a society have gotten away from real connection. We sit at home on the computer or tv, play on our phones when we’re out with friends, and very often miss the simple, beautiful moments in life because we are distracted. It’s my goal to capture those moments and bring them to light and encourage others to find those moments for themselves.
