Art & Life with Kevrie Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevrie Howard.

Kevrie, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
As a child I spent a majority of my upbringing in Mesa, where my mother and grandmother would take care of me. Growing up, family was a big part of my life; especially being minutes away from several family members. My mom did a great job introducing me to several different flavors of music. She always encouraged me to play music, even when it didn’t seem like something for me. I dedicate everything that I’ve created and accomplished to her and my grandmother for always believing in me.

I have had the honor of playing in several bands, including my current band “Fear and Love”. In the last year or so, I’ve started trying my luck at writing my own music under the moniker, “The Vicarious King”. Both have been more successful than I could imagine, with 2 albums released on streaming sites as well as a couple of music videos.

This last year alone, I debuted my very first music video as a solo artist. For me, “Somewhat New” was a great intro to the film community, and I’m very thankful to have worked with so many wonderful people on that project.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
For me, art is about putting yourself out there. To feel the absolute freedom of self-expression is such a wondrous experience, and once I put my music out there it’s no longer a matter of my sole interpretation. Listeners should feel free to interpret the message however they best see fit. As a kid, I would google lyrical interpretations to song meanings, and it always felt like someone had something different to say. Unless the artist came out and walked listeners through a song, listeners would feel compelled to provide their own theories. Basically, even if I explained my method, the end experience will provide a different meaning for everyone else.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
There’s nothing more heartbreaking then to have to put a project on hold because of low funds. I see a lot of musicians trying a lot of different budgeting methods, but it’s a matter of what works for you. Make the most out of your tools and supplies. If you think out of the box, you can accomplish more than someone dumping a fortune on an incomplete idea.

Keep your eyes and ears out for new opportunities. It’s crazy how things can snowball into new and exciting experiences. It can all be yours if you budget your money and your time

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m a little harder to catch these days, but you can find all of my work on all streaming sites, as well as YouTube and Bandcamp. My website is still in development, but my current hub is on Instagram (@The_Vicarious_King).
