Art & Life with Jose Carlos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Carlos.

Jose, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a portrait photographer in Southern Arizona. My family moved to Tucson, Arizona from the west suburbs of Chicago, Illinois in 2001. Looking back, I feel like I’ve always had a connection to photography. I remember drawing in a sketch pad and using disposable cameras as a kid. I also created cartoon scenes from scratch in the Paint program on Windows ’95. My dad gave me a point-and-shoot camera in my teenage years, and in my early 20’s I enjoyed taking creative photos on my phone. This all led to me buying my very first dSLR in 2013, where I began to hone my skills and realize my passion for photography. Today, I’ve come to love the art of portraiture, and have become obsessed with learning how to master light.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I don’t simply take pictures, my images are created through a thought process, planning and a lot of hard work. I find inspiration that sparks an idea, and from there I start putting everything together. Planning out my lighting setup, what backdrop to use, and any props I might incorporate. Choosing which lens to use is very important, as each lens has a different focal length and gives its own unique perspective. I find a model that fits my vision, and think about wardrobe, hair and make-up that will bring it all together. It doesn’t end with the photo shoot; post processing is essential in bringing my vision to life.

I love to create, and I love to challenge myself every time I shoot. I want to show people something thought provoking that they have never seen before. I want to create artwork that makes the viewer feel inspired, to feel happiness, excitement, sadness, nostalgia, anything. I also love to connect with other creatives, photographers and models alike, who are just as passionate about their art. Something that wouldn’t be possible had I not found photography.

What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I’m lucky enough to have found an amazing photography community here in Tucson. A Facebook group called TAPP (Tucson Aspiring and Professional Photographers) that was created by Justin Haugen. I’ve met some amazing human beings in this group who inspire me to work hard every day. I’ve learned a lot from the conversations I’ve had in the group and in-person at the various TAPP events held throughout the year. I’d suggest to artists who feel alone and are searching for inspiration, advice or friends with similar interests to reach out to their local art community. Like many photographers, I grew up an introvert. Reaching out and talking to people I’ve just met was a terrifying thought. But having something in common with them was the bridge that forced me out of my shell. Make the effort to reach out, meet new people, and make friends.
