Art & Life with Jordan Bumguardner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Bumguardner.

Jordan, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m from Arizona by way of California. Growing up near Yosemite, it’s no wonder to me that I came to work in a visual arts, that goes doubly when you consider that my family moved from there to Joshua Tree, and trebly so after the subsequent move to Page. Having Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, Lake Powell, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Glen Canyon, the Vermilion Cliffs, The Kaibab Plateau, and the Colorado River in my backyard was certainly a privilege afforded to a select few, and I like to think I made the most of my time spent up there. I graduated high school in the top five percentile, in addition to being a nationally ranked percussionist. Having received a full scholarship from ASU, I came to Phoenix and received a degree in teaching, but have recently returned to classes to pursue a degree in film production from the Scottsdale School of Film and Theater.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My artifice (photography, film, music, writing) is based almost wholly on robust, instinctual observation. It is my goal to strip away the half-truths heaped on the world by its institutions and shift power to those who would otherwise go without. For a very long time, I thought that there was some secret to the act of creating when in truth, anyone can and should trust themselves to divine creative truth.

In your view, what is the biggest issue artists have to deal with?
Monetary support. We can best see this illustrated in the advent of streaming music, artists make next to nothing from outlets such as Spotify and Apple Music. These practices should be smashed as soon as possible.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I’m on Instagram @shelfinterestphotography, my Twitter is @shelfinterest, my Patreon Page is https://www.patreon.com/ShelfInterest, and you can view my short films on YouTube by searching the username Shelf Interest.
