Art & Life with Jimmy Song

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Song.

Jimmy, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
When I first attended the University of Arizona, I jumped around to different majors, never really knowing what I wanted to do. I originally started as a pre-pharmacy major then jumped into biomedical engineering. Organic chemistry scared me off, and I eventually settled into a finance major along with one more major and two minors. I didn’t really get hooked into photography until my summer internship in Hong Kong where I brought my camera along and documented the amazing experience. I fell in love with taking photos of people and landscape and kept pursuing it after the internship. Photography was always an outlet for me to pursue my creative ideas, never something I thought I could pursue full time. I was always planning on working in the finance industry in New York City. During my last semester in college, I was flown to New York City and interviewed for a finance position, and a few weeks later received a job offer. During my last semester of college, I decided to take a leap of faith and pursue my passion for photography and videography full time. After graduation, I moved home and spent all my efforts into growing my business, accepting every opportunity that presented itself. It was definitely a slow and rough start. There would be months where I didn’t have any bookings. It took me about two years after college to finally build up a sustainable business. I’ve been fortunate to travel to over 20 countries in the past two years and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the future.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a photographer and videographer. I mainly photograph portraits, weddings, and travel content. For video, I love creating travel video and wedding films. I am always looking to challenge myself and improve my work.

What responsibility, if any, do you think artists have to use their art to help alleviate problems faced by others? Has your art been affected by issues you’ve concerned about?
I believe the role of artists has definitely changed over time. There are lower barriers to entry to owning a camera these days. I think it is important to document and share events around the world to keep people informed. With easier access to cameras these days, there is more content out there. I enjoy browsing other people’s work and using it as inspiration for myself. I also enjoy looking at other artist’s work to get a sense of the different kinds of cultures out there.
