Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Anthony.
Jason, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I’m a native Texan and came to Arizona by way of South Carolina in late 1999. My career in tattooing started in 2004 after a short, yearlong apprenticeship. After opening a tattoo shop in 2009 I’ve been getting by well enough to keep the doors open and keep the tattooers that work with me fed.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’m tattooer and will occasionally paint pictures. I use my hands and just kind of hold things and move those things around on whatever surface I’m working with… it typically leaves marks that are more or less permanent when I do this. I do this because most of the time that shit is cool. The message in what I do is that sometimes you think something is cool and you want me to make that cool thing a reality, but a reality that is on your person or sometimes on a piece of paper. The thing that I hope people take away is a tattoo or painting that they will be happy with for at least 2 or 3 weeks, hopefully longer. The thing you should know about my craft is that I struggle with the term ‘art’ and think people can stand to either take themselves more seriously or less seriously depending on the level that their head is either up your own ass or in the clouds… choose whatever applies and carry on with the appropriate course of action.
What would you recommend to an artist new to the city, or to art, in terms of meeting and connecting with other artists and creatives?
I’m not too sure, I’ve never had this issue. Join a cult? Start a political rally? Find a DND group online and then meet up with them in a public venue to make sure they’re relatively safe to be around?
What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
One can see my work walking around on people that I’ve tattooed and you can support my work by coming and getting tattooed by me or one of the tattooers that work at Golden Rule Tattoo with me.
