Art & Life with James Cowden

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Cowden.

James, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Life’s full of twists and turns. The unexpected, the successes, the failures, the bad choices, the good luck, the reality checks, and resulting revelations. I’m just grateful to do what I get to do. It sustains me. I play music, and if I do it right, everyone is happy…

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I play music… done it since high school but never before as a career. I’ve had some golden moments I have to say. I cherish them all. Good bands, good friends and good tunes. As a solo, I try to be authentic in my own tunes and place a personal interpretation on any cover tune I might do. You’re there to entertain. You can’t please everyone. But you try. It’s a give and take…

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities, and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
Be rational. Be realistic. Be frugal. Don’t deny yourself that which brings you joy. Have patience. Do your best to plan ahead. “Do you want to be a star? Or do you want to make a living and live a good life?” Find your comfort zone and work towards it.
