Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Joseph Young.
Jacob, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born in Puerto Barrios and adopted out of an orphanage in Guatemala City when I was 5. I was raised in Golden Colorado with the spirit and essence of small-town values and pride. Our family consisted of 3 sisters and 2 older brothers one of whom was also adopted out of an orphanage that my mother helped run during the Vietnam war. I grew to develop not only the love for music as a child from records being played every Saturday by my father to the sounds of my brother practicing his drum set every day for hours. But I also developed the love for acting that has not only taken me from home town stages but also black box theatre shows in Santa Fe New Mexico where I studied the art for a few years but also San Diego California. It was really there where my worlds began to mold as film acting became more relevant in my life so did the love of creating music. But I will say one cannot travel down this road alone without acknowledgment of those who helped shape and mold your existence, I have found myself consistently thinking of my high school theatre teacher John Klug, I also cannot forget my closet friend and bandmate Danny Smith which whom we have been involved in many of project during the years which includes our latest Dead Hearts Club. I also must say I wouldn’t be where I am or who I am without the honesty and intellectual creative guidance from my wife Joylyn Young, she has been through thick and thin with me and has seen me at my best and worst but has kept me level headed through many of years.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am a self-taught musician and singer-songwriter. I also am an actor as well who has spent time on stage, within the four walls of the black box, and in front of the film camera as well. I also have been involved in several bands that range from psychedelic rock, country folk, and experimental hip hop.
I create because I have found that the process of creation has created me, and so shall it continue. I would like to also say please try not to underestimate yourself by limiting your creative process and be genuine to admirers and others walking their path as well.
How do you think about success, as an artist, and what do quality do you feel is most helpful?
My success is walking away from a project feeling proud of what I was a part of creating. As far what essential qualities need to be present for success I honestly can’t say I know everyone is so different I guess that’s what makes it so beautiful.
