Art & Life with Iyanna Morrison

Today we’d like to introduce you to Iyanna Morrison.

Iyanna, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Art is something I took on at a very young age it’s a trait I picked up after my dad. When my dad was younger, he was always painting, airbrushing, and drawing anything art related. Everything I’ve seen him create was always amazing to me it made me want to become an artist. We would always color battle in coloring books to compete on who had the better picture. It meant so much to me; because it was something that my dad and I both enjoyed doing, we were able to build a stronger bond together through art.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I’ve loved art for as long as I could remember. It has always been my escape goat from the challenges of life. Art has become my therapeutic remedy and a way for me to express myself to my fullest extent. I love seeing my pieces transform from just black and white sketches to colorful images.  I’m a 90’s baby, so I grew up in the era of Rug Rats, Hey Arnold, Doug, and more, where there was always so much color. I love being able to take old cartoons/90s vibes and creating or recreating pieces with a twist of my style added to them. Painting just makes me so happy; it allows myself and other artists to just be able to express ourselves. I truly feel life without art would be uninteresting. Art simply allows me to be as creative as I want to be without limitations I can create my own views through painting.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
I feel personally that in this new era, we as artists have more an advantage of getting our work out for the world today. With the benefit of having social media makes it very easy to network and advertise ourselves. I think First Friday downtown is one of the best things our city does because it allows us as freelance artists to go out and show off what we are capable to do!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I display all of my art through social media because I’m still working on launching a website for it. So if people can find examples of my work on my Instagram under the username ladyballabro.

Iyanna looks like a great person in addition to being a great person. I was inspired by her story and would be interested in seeing her work featured in a public art exhibit.
