Art & Life with Helena Weaver

Today we’d like to introduce you to Helena Weaver.

Helena, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Well, as a child I was always very intrigued with tattoos because my parents are heavily tattooed. I loved the way they looked and remember always thinking in my head how cool I thought my parents were because they had so many. My father is also an artist and I always had thought his artwork was beautiful. It really didn’t hit me how much I loved art until I was around 15 or 16. Throughout my life, I was bullied and had had horrible self-image issues. I had been super depressed and art turned into being a huge coping mechanism for me. Art brought me into a new light because whether I was having a good day or bad, I always had paper and paint to vent too. Art saved my life.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
The inspiration is everywhere. Inspiration comes to me at any moment in time and I just go with the flow. A big role that plays into my art is American traditional tattoos. My mom eventually got remarried to a tattoo artist so of course, on my 18th birthday I got my first tattoo done by him. I had always been super interested in the tattooing industry to where I eventually started working at my stepdad’s shop doing cleaning, food runs, and paperwork for clients. Which then eventually turned into an apprenticeship. Working in that shop, I learned so much about painting and being surrounded by amazing artists inspired a lot of my work as well. Most of my art that I create is with watercolors and I use the method called “spit and shade” where you actually use your spit for shading your art piece. Overall though, I would say I always try to really change and try painting new concepts because I always want to challenge myself and learn how to draw or paint something new. In the end, I just want my artwork to make people happy because I think everyone deserves that. That’s why I love using bright, bold colors because it really just hits you in the face and hopefully will bring people back to earth for a second and people can be reminded that there is so much beauty in the world.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I know this may sound like a silly concept but I believe in this short saying so much. If you give, you shall receive. Also, don’t give up because in the end being happy is always more important than money.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
You can always support me by having me paint something for you or share my work from your social media pages! I will also be tattooing in the near future so if you go and follow either of my pages you can stay updated!
