Art & Life with Dominique Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Wilson.

Dominique, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
Portraying characters is something I have always admired and wanted to do. As a child, I would watch tv shows, movies and cartoons just to learn their ways and studied their looks. There was actually a point in my life where I wanted to pursue acting, but I was just too shy to step foot in form of a camera and speak to the world. Yet that still did not stop me from emulating styles and acting out as the characters I have grown to love. As a child, Halloween was my favorite holiday for the reason of being allowed to become whatever you wanted without people judging you. It became a bit difficult as I grew older and, of course, I had to live up to the ways of life. I would still continue to “dress up” and hand out candy, but I loved showing off my creations. Once I heard about cosplaying, I knew I found my niche.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I began cosplaying officially August of 2017 and Newark Comic-Con in Newark, NJ was my first convention. I have always heard of cosplaying but I was never able to try it out. I decided to wear Poison Ivy because of my love for Batman’s female villains growing up. It was such an awesome experience seeing all of the beautiful and creative cosplays, I knew I had found my niche in the geek community. As I said before, I always loved to portray characters and prior to cosplaying I became Newark, New Jersey’s first female Michael Jackson impersonator, Mikette. I would perform all over New Jersey and even perform in places like the Prudential Center in Newark and Michael’s hometown Gary, Indiana. I would go on to impersonate other celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Diana Ross and the late Prince and Whitney Houston. I always tell people, live your dreams or you’ll help others live theirs.

Any advice for aspiring or new artists?
You only live once, do what you love and have fun doing it, even if it’s just for fun. A pursuit of happiness.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
I perform at local events or I’ll go to comic conventions. I have an Instagram account and I can be found on Facebook as Cosplay By Mikette.
