Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Thomas.
Christina, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I am from East Tennessee, but just recently relocated to Phoenix, AZ from the outer banks of North Carolina. I grew up in a family of artists, and even had a ceramics studio in my dining room growing up instead of a dining room table. I really have found my passion in Photography and I am pursuing a BFA in Graphic Design and Photography from the Academy of Art University. I am currently working part time as a newborn photographer, while being a full-time college student and full-time mother to my two-year-old son, Sawyer. I also paint and draw, but I think that I can really show my creativity and vision through photography.
Can you give our readers some background on your art?
I am both a portrait and creative photographer. I like to use both digital and film cameras and have a lot of fun doing nature photography. Especially since I am new to the Western portion of the United States, I am really taking wonder and enjoyment out of all the new and beautiful aspects of the Southwest. I really find inspiration and peace from the natural landscapes around me and find something calming and get some anxiety relief when I am in the outdoors. I want to share that feeling with other’s through my photography.
Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
I definitely understand having financial challenges in pursuing an artistic path or career. I think that just making sure you devote as much time as possible to your artistic talent is the best advice I have. Even if you don’t have much money, have to work a lot, and don’t have much time, try and sketch something, take some cool photos with your phone, just don’t forget to be creative as much as possible. If you can’t devote money to your art, you can devote a few minutes here and there until you are more financially stable and you will be more prepared to continue with your art.
