Art & Life with After the Calm

Today we’d like to introduce you to After the Calm.

After the Calm, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
We are a five-piece band from Phoenix, Arizona (Logan Miracle – Vox, David Nunez – Guitar, Jon Habermacher – Guitar, Henry Cota Jr. – Bass, Kody Rattler – Drums). The band formed five years ago on Memorial Day. It started as just a jam session that a few of us took part of. We can credit Discover Card as being the hub of most of our connections. It seems like everyone we know either worked there or is best friends from someone that worked there lol. The only person that came from a different part of the cloth was our singer Logan. We found him on Craigslist. It took about a year before we started playing any shows around town. We wanted to perfect our songs before getting out in the world.

Once we started playing shows, we instantly started making connections with people. The shows started getting bigger and we got to play with some amazing bands (I, Prevail, Palaye Royale, Too Close To Touch). In 2018 three big things were achieved, we got to play The Marquee Theatre with local heroes Authority Zero, released three singles and finally got to play Warped Tour. Now that we just got our toes wet from our first regional tour we have a lot to plan for. It’s been an amazing journey thus far and we look forward to what the future brings.

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
We are musicians and make energetic music that gets you jumping. Our inspiration comes from our personal experiences. The songs capture a feeling and we hope that others connect to that feeling. It’s a nice comfort to not feel alone and to be part of something.

Artists rarely, if ever pursue art for the money. Nonetheless, we all have bills and responsibilities and many aspiring artists are discouraged from pursuing art due to financial reasons. Any advice or thoughts you’d like to share with prospective artists?
When you decide to start a band, nobody tells you the truth. You are starting a business and it takes money if you want to make a decent income from it. Just to clarify this doesn’t apply to the passion musician. The passion musician is someone that makes music for the pure pleasure of it with no financial success in mind, both are fine but this analogy is for the entrepreneur.

Pretend your band is a new restaurant in town. You have great food (music) and the ingredients (band members) you use are top notch. You should be good right? No customers are coming in because no one knows about you! How do you get the word out about your restaurant? You have to advertise. Right here is where most musicians stop. Finances get in the way and it’s understandable to a certain degree. This is where budgeting and understanding what a good investment is. It’s not impossible to find success, you just need to understand what you are actually getting into and have a solid plan of attack.

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Luckily in this day and age, the internet is a powerful connection maker. We try to be on every platform possible like YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. By following us on these platforms, you support our art and if you share you increase the chance of others discovering our music. Reach out to us, we love meeting new people and getting to know your story.
