Art & Life with Adelaide Marcus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adelaide Marcus.

Adelaide, please kick things off for us by telling us about yourself and your journey so far.
I was born to eccentric Artist parents. My father, a painter and musician, and my mother a Belly Dancer, among other performance and Martial Arts forms. I grew up in a surreal environment, learning to spell my name with paint on the walls, singing in a family band at age 6, and making it through college studying for exams in green rooms. All throughout college, I was establishing a professional life in entertainment. Upon graduating, I took that on full time as an independent contractor working with about a dozen agents and hand fulls of collaborators. Interestingly enough, my degree, psychology, is seemingly was “the arts,” however, all of my learnings, passions, and interests come into play in my visionary art and overall life expression!

Can you give our readers some background on your art?
My art takes on many forms! We can simplify by saying I am both a “performance” AND “visual” artist, and yes, of course, those often overlap!:) Under the performance art umbrella, I am a belly dancer, fire spinner, snake charmer, mermaid, stilt walker and so on. Honestly, I have done play a lot of strange characters, but the ones I listed are more re-occurring and developed, so for the sake of time, I will sum it up there. As a Visual Artist, I work with all sorts of mediums including acrylic watercolor, pen & ink, and a personal favorite, oil! I also create belly casts for pregnant women and have painted other 3-D art upon commission. I also have explored artistic films, which is a natural blend of my performance and visual offerings. Regardless of the medium, I am expressing the inner worlds, places that no words could accurately describe. My art is considered part of the “Visionary” genre because it is created with intentions to open the viewer’s mind, to provoke thought, and stretch the imagination, be it by concept, color, or style. Furthermore, My art, visual art, in particular, is a way for me to integrate all that I see and feel. While creating, I meditate and process the ebbs and flow of my life. If you were to look at my art in a timeline, you could see my autobiography. Like the great artist Frida Kahlo, my work reflects my life’s journey.

Do you think conditions are generally improving for artists? What more can cities and communities do to improve conditions for artists?
It’s difficult for me to say whether times are easier or harder for artists in recent times because I have been at my career full-time for over a decade, and am not sure what it would be like if I were just getting started. I will say that one of the challenging things is reaching new audiences. After being established with a certain group of buyers, there is a time when a plateau is reached, and it becomes time to find new eyes who want your art on their walls. Patrons are a blessing because they are repeat buyers and enjoy following the life and personality of the artist. I hold my patrons close to heart and wish to call in more support in this way!

What’s the best way for someone to check out your work and provide support?
Currently, I am in a chapter of life where I’ve stepped back from the spotlight to play the part of the “hermit artist.” During this time of re-evaluating and refining my skills, I am mostly sharing/selling online via my website www.ArtByAdelaide.com and of course, Instagram (info@ArtByAdelaide) and Facebook (Adelaide Marcus). One of the best ways to stay in the loop and support my evolving art offerings is to subscribe to my newsletter, where I share my latest artwork with full descriptions as well as updates on my whereabouts and upcoming shows or workshops. You can sign up to receive these inspiring update straight from my site.
