Hi Mikel or Mike, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I’m sketching and working a layout out, I’ll look up at the clock, and a few hours have flown by, And then it all comes together when I figured it out and the pieces start clicking.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mikel Whelan. I’ve been doing illustration since I was old enough to finger-paint. My professional career started out doing a bit of everything for an animated series. Since then I’ve done everything ranging from creating logos and spot illustrations, to movie creature concepts and entertainment design concepts.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
My Dad. He instilled in me a strong work ethic, which has served me well. I’ll be forever grateful for that.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When clients started using Gen. AI. It got very disheartening at times. But good clients know good design work and would rather have that.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that there’s something other than us out there, whether it be aliens, paranormal, etc. But I have no proof…yet

At the end of the day, all you really have is your reputation or how people will think of you.
