An Inspired Chat with Lisa Mitts

We recently had the chance to connect with Lisa Mitts and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Lisa, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I think many of us, struggle with knowing our true value and worth. We confuse people’s approval or how many fans/friends we have with the only true measure of worth, that being what God was willing to pay for us. We can only find our real inner value with knowing how much we are truly loved by our Creator.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a singer/songwriter/recording artist and performer.. I also bring awareness and advocate for survivors of human trafficking here in the U.S, through Lisa Mitts Music (on all digital platforms) and my performances . My biggest annual event is the Evening Of Destiny Benefit Concert and speaker event, a fundraiser specifically focused on this mission for a 501C3 we founded in 2013, Destiny House Restoration Center.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Well clearly that answer for me is Jesus…my relationship with Him has transformed every part of my being and He has always seen the true me and helps me everyday to be all He has called me to be. After that I would say my husband, David who has always believed in me and has been a vessel of so much healing and love in my life. I wouldn’t be where I am without him.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
While I had some childhood struggles, my most defining was at the age of 23 when I was attacked at knifepoint, tied up and raped. By the grace of God I survived but the trauma affected me for many years even as I seemed to be successful on the outside as a wife, mom and musician, I still struggled a lot on the inside. Like peeling an onion, my healing has occurred over time and at deeper levels…mainly through prayer, reading and meditating on God’s Word, acupuncture, music and songwriting. Today, i am so blessed to be able to share my journey openly and help others who have gone through severe trauma.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
The biggest project I have been committed to for 13 years now has been our non-profit Destiny House Restoration Center. While we have seen great growth through our education and advocacy, especially through our community events, and while we have opened an aftercare outpatient program for survivors of trauma, we have yet to see the fulfillment of the ultimate goal of our program, which is to purchase and open a home for long-term transition for women 18 and over, who are survivors of either sex-trafficking, sexual violence or abuse. We are closer than we’ve ever been and while I have wanted to give up many times, it is just something I cannot give up on and I believe we will see the fulfillment of it by the end of this year.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
My love for my husband, children and grandkids; a handful of true lifelong friends and hopefully the difference I made in the lives of others to inspire them that each of us makes a difference and together we can do great things especially to bring more healing and love in this world.
