Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Porth.
Megan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a second-generation Arizonan and third-generation entrepreneur. I grew up in the small western town of Lake Havasu City, AZ and spent most of my time as a kid playing in the sparkly blue waters of the Colorado River. Because I was raised by business-owners, I also spent a lot of my childhood attending networking events, strategic planning meetings, and marketing seminars. My father is a broadcaster, which inspired me to go to Arizona State University, where I obtained my degree in journalism.
While I was attending ASU, I worked for the Arizona Department of Veterans Services as the legislative liaison. There, I learned a lot about policy and law-making and developed a great admiration for the men and women, who serve our country. After that, I moved into the political world and managed two U.S. Congressional campaigns and a state-wide initiative Prop 205. I quickly learned that I DO NOT want to live in that world!
I then accepted a position with In A Box Business Solutions as its Business Development Manager, assisting the tech start-up in growing to the international company it is today. Additionally, I was the Chief Operations Officer of a web-based real estate training company, where I managed hundreds of clients and a full staff of employees.
My passion for helping businesses grow inspired me to go to law school, where I graduated with honors, clerked with an award-winning non-profit law firm and the Veterans’ Court and created and supported a number of school organizations. Upon graduating from law school, I immediately began working with a prestigious boutique litigation law firm, where I assisted in winning a landmark case regarding medical marijuana dispensaries in Arizona.
After working in litigation, I decided that the legal business model was antiquated and needed some innovation. In 2016, I formed Your Contract Shop. Your Contract Shop is a web-based virtual law firm that utilizes processes, technology, and modern business practices to make legal advice as accessible as buying a book online. The law firm strives to make going to see an attorney fun!
The vision is to create a world where individuals and business owners get the legal advice they need quickly, easily, and affordably. To date, Your Contract Shop has helped hundreds of clients understand their contracts and the legal needs of their businesses. I am also a contributor to a number of print and broadcasting channels. Specifically, I appear weekly on a nationally syndicated radio show called THINK! America Radio.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Ha! Of course not.
This firm is boot-strapped. Therefore, all funding is coming from me and my family’s personal funds. My husband also owns his own business, and there are times when we both experience cash flow issues at the same time. Fortunately, because my firm has minimal overhead, I have been able to survive the peaks and valleys of entrepreneurship financials. But, it has not been easy.
Also, the firm’s business model is different from traditional law firms, and there are times when its efficacy has been questioned. I learned early that people did not totally understand that we are licensed attorneys and I had to pivot in my marketing and positioning to ensure that our target market knew they were getting the real deal.
Please tell us about Your Contract Shop.
Your Contract Shop focuses on contracts and business law. The firm utilizes the most efficient technologies available to ensure that the work is thorough, effective, and confidential. By automating as many tasks as possible, Your Contract Shop has lower overhead than a traditional law firm and can pass these savings onto the client.
Your Contract Shop has reevaluated every aspect of the legal business model with an eye toward efficiency and endeavor to offer a “no-frills” practice that focuses on clients’ needs. There are no offices, full-time assistants, or any non-essential items that contribute to our overhead. Because of this, our rates are affordable, and our clients are very happy.
We are very proud of our culture of fun! It is not every day that you can say that you had fun with your attorney and we work hard to make the experience with our law firm enjoyable. We don’t look, sound or work like typical attorneys and our clients love it.
What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
Very much so. Phoenix, especially the #yesPHX movement, is a phenomenal model for the rest of the country on how entrepreneurship should look. The people, companies, and clients are diverse, engaged, inclusive, and inspired.
Additionally, Arizona is a little bit of an unsung hero as far as business laws are concerned. Many businesses choose to incorporate in Delaware because of its corporate-friendly environment, but Arizona is also very attractive.
