Life and Work with Catie Fisher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Catie Fisher.

Catie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a kid, seventh grader to be specific, I used to take tweezers to school. At lunch times, (and even sometimes in class!) I would do people’s brows. This continued all through high school and I even had neighborhood kids come over to my house asking me to do their eyebrows.

During prom season, everyone was always at my house first, to get their makeup done, as well as dance performances and recitals. I loved it so much.

After high school—I don’t know why not, but—didn’t go straight into skincare. I dabbled with college and worked at Walgreens as a beauty advisor, where I met my first bridal client!

I continued to do bridal makeup as a second job and moved into working in jewelry stores, where I met a girl named Noel who encouraged me to apply at a local salon/spa. I left jewelry and I was at that spa for eight years. In 2015, I left to become more independent, starting Siren Skin Care. It was the best thing I have ever done.

I have since become triple certified in brow tattoos- both Brow Calligraphy and Powder Brows, and am as obsessed with eyebrows as I was in seventh grade. 😉 I still do lots of bridal makeup, saying “yes” as often as I can. But day to day, brows are my bread and butter. Ooooh, I wish I could have some bread and butter right now, drool.

I consider expanding, but I have my little place, tucked away in the Blenman Elm neighborhood of Tucson. Big windows and a tree out front. I am very happy there, being my own boss.

Has it been a smooth road?
Taxes and accounting were probably the things that bugged me the most when starting out on my own. I wasn’t used to taking care of that all by myself and so it was tough. I enlisted the help of a CPA on a friend’s recommendation and it made everything so much easier. Don’t be afraid to ask for help with your money. 😉

And for anyone wanting to start a business on their own, I would say “Don’t be scared!”

Just organized yourself. Designate certain days for certain tasks like “order day” or “bank deposit day” and STICK TO IT.

There are also soooo many business owners out there willing to lend their help and advice, so take ADVANTAGE of that. I did. I had a friend who owned a spa when I left my former employer, and I worked there a little bit. The girls there really helped my transition before I became completely independent.

There are resources everywhere, don’t ever feel alone!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Siren Skin Care – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Although I offer facials, body waxing, and bridal makeup, I am genuinely in love with brows the most. Brows are my favorite child. When I am having a conversation with you, yes, I am looking at your brows. 100% true.

That love for the perfect brow has never gone away. I don’t know how one person becomes so obsessed with a particular area of facial hair! I prefer a brow that mimics one’s natural shape and color but also really enjoy the transformation a full brow redesign can offer. When your client has tears of joy in their eyes, it really gets ya!

Middle school, tweezing led me to waxing, coloring, tinting, and now offering soon-to-be-three different permanent makeup techniques for brows! I am so smitten with Microblading, probably the main service for which I am currently known. I genuinely get excited to see my micro clients and work on them. It’s my favorite service, and I think that is reflected in my work.

Another thing that has always been very important to me is creating a safe and loving space for my clients/friends. I designed the spa to kind of looks like a home, or living room. I have had mail carriers ask if I live there (lol). I have a no shoe policy and have a basket of comfy socks at the door for those who prefer not to go bare.

The objective was to make guests feel like they’re going over to their friend’s house to have a makeover. A way-better-version of “Let’s bust out the wax pot!” where not only do they leave feeling like the royalty they are, but negative self-talk is discouraged.

If you lay down on my bed or sit in my makeup chair and immediately tell me alllll the things you don’t like about yourself, I will shush you right up. “I’m sorry, but that kind of talk isn’t allowed here.” (Shrug)
I really prefer to focus, and help clients focus on what they really like about themselves! I believe in tight hugs and shared stories, and truly want my clients to leave as friends.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
When I was a kiddo, I thought I would grow up to be a mermaid (à la Daryl Hannah in “Splash”). I didn’t become one, so I named my company “Siren.”

I never really saw “why not”, if that makes sense. I had a super supportive mom and I always just believed I could do what I wanted, provided I could figure that out. It took me a minute to figure it out (I was twenty one when finally went to school for Esthetics), but maybe that’s what I needed. Time. And less pressure. I feel like if my mom had been hard on me as a kid I would’ve just gotten obligatory, doesn’t-make-me-joyful J.O.B.

But here we are. 😉
