Meet Linda Glover Gooch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Glover Gooch.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I Began Oil painting at the age of 13 when I visited a home of friends who had a studio set up. I was very intrigued by the supplies and ask my mother for them. She bought me my first set of oil paints and put me into private oil painting classes, I painted with adults at that time. I’m still grateful she listens to that desire in me. Sense both of my parents and my grandmother were amateur artists, it was easy to step into. I continued on with my journey, studying at several private art schools in the western states. I begin teaching at the age of 28 while living in California and still continue to teach adult oil painting at the Scottsdale Artist School.

I stayed with my career while raising children, they grew up under my easel and spent many a weekend in my beginning years at art fairs while living in Santa Fe New Mexico. The art scene of Santa Fe had a large influence on me and the direction of my work. I was introduced to Plein Air painting there in New Mexico 30 years ago. It built a strong foundation in me and I still use nature as my main source of truth and learning. I moved to Mesa in 2001 and begin to spend many hours at the Grand Canyon, it has become a large focus for me, but I’m also drawn to the sky and our Arizona Monsoons that create such drama in the sky. I no longer attend art fairs as most of my work is sold in galleries, exhibits and Museum shows. I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to create my art and share it with the world.

Please tell us about your art.
I paint in oils, it is my main medium. My subject is mostly landscape, of the southwest, it includes high mountain ranges along with the Arizona Desert. I do paint still life as well, but my main body of work leans toward the landscape. I spent a great deal of time painting on location, creating small studies to take back to the studio to assist with larger works. I will use my studies along with photographic reference I took while onsite to create bigger finished works for the galleries or upcoming shows.

I paint because I love the process and the materials. It was the materials that intrigued me in the beginning and the character of oils is dear to me. They are rich and luscious to work with, I just enjoy them! I hope my work brings joy to the viewer. Maybe it will remind them of special times and places in their lives. Time goes by so fast, I hope my work will stop people, help them slow down and appreciate life, this earth and realize how precious it is.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
Success to me is directly related to the quality of one’s life, spiritually. Not necessarily how financially well off they are, although that will go hand and hand with spiritual health. AND… an artist does need financial success to keep them painting. I base my life on the word of GOD and it has been the source and drive for my success, applying it to my painting career. BUT. one does have to put their hand to work. I do know that to be a successful artist, you much have a passion for it, become strong with thick skin because it is a very competitive profession. It is a life long journey, perseverance is a must.
