Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Poindexter.
Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an author and artist, I began writing a novel years ago and after 5-6 chapters I stopped. It would be years again, before I came back to it and this time I decided I wanted to adapt the novel into a comic series, thus ‘Rabbit’ was born.
I created character bio’s and lore. I outlined their abilities and powers and how they exist in my universe with each other. I gave them height’s and ages and goals. Before I knew it, I had a roster of characters and history and I started developing my first comic book using this and the first chapter of the novel that inspired the whole project. I released my first book in Fall of 2024.
To date, I execute every component of putting together my comic books from creating and writing the stories to publishing.; including the artwork, digitally by hand (NO A.I.). I am particularly proud of this fact. I have come to learn this is not usually the standard for how comics are made.
I am currently in the process of illustrating for the fifth book in my series!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say the only hurdles I’ve faced were learning the “how-to” of it all. I’m self taught so researching the best programs to use, how to publish, etc., that took time. I have a system now and while my process may be a bit slower on account of me doing everything, it’s less costly and allows me creative freedom across the board.
Marketing and getting the word out there about the project is the next frontier at this point.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m an author, illustrator, artist in general. I love storytelling and I love finding new ways to express myself across mediums. I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown and how far I’ve come as an island of one throughout this process. I am a perpetual student of life and I think what sets me apart is my perspective and understanding of nuance.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is that the idea of my success is based on how I measure it and not in someone else’s projection of what success should look like.
There’s a saying that I love; “you can’t judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree.” We have to recognize and be comfortable in our own strengths and abilities and allow space for those who have strengths outside of our own.
