Today we’d like to introduce you to Adria Somerville.
Hi Adria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my business in May of 2020 in Tucson, AZ, in the middle of the pandemic. I did what most people would advise against actually – I quit my full-time job and said “I think I’m going to start a business.” I had very little savings and a huge dream. I worked on building my business until I lost my mom very unexpectedly in January of 2023. I wrapped up with the clients I had, and decided to pick up my life and move to Phoenix. I took some time off for personal matters and did some traveling, then re-launched up here! I’ve become active with a couple of networking groups and am always out and about making new connections. I love meeting new people and learning how we can all work together to grow our businesses.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey has definitely not been smooth in any way, shape or form. Losing my mom was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever been through and it really affected me so much so that I shut my business down for a bit. Moving to a new city (when I moved here) not knowing a soul has also really tested me. I took for granted how many people I knew in Tucson. When I launched originally, I knew almost everyone in my industry. I had trades lined up immediately and I had referrals coming in from everywhere. I didn’t have to hit the streets or network. Being here has really been a grind, but it has taught me so much and I’m actually really grateful for it, it needed to happen. I have to put myself out there on a daily basis to be in front of people. I create content to stay visible on social media and I take on small jobs here and there to keep building my portfolio.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mood Design LLC?
I am an interior designer and consultant. I work with clients on projects as little as a family room or bedroom makeover, or as large as a home remodel (think new floors, cabinets, countertops, and paint.) I firmly believe that the spaces we create, walk into, dine in, live in, etc are a feeling. When you walk into a store or restaurant, you immediately sense the mood – whether or not you recognize it. You feel cozy, excited, relaxed or hungry even. The same applies to your home and I want that space to be the very best it can be for you. Your mood and sense of well-being starts there and it sets the tone for the day. I’m also not one to just agree with you. I’m not here to just take your money and give you lip service, and I will let you know (politely of course) when I can’t let you do something because it will negatively impact you down the road. My clients that have hired me have trusted me with the most precious and personal thing they can – their home. I don’t take that lightly and I want the very best for them. I want their money to go far and I will be honest with them when they should invest in something and when they shouldn’t.
What are your plans for the future?
My plan for the future is to continue to stay active in making new connections and simply growing my business to be as successful as I can be. My goal is to stay busy, but not overwhelmed. I want to create a balance for family, travel and fun things in my off time.
