Daily Inspiration: Meet DJ Benz

Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Benz.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my journey with a simple passion for the turntables in college. I watched DJs on campus and on Youtube, which led me to do college parties in my apartment. Then in Philly, I was doing events with DJ Spontane, a well-known DJ in the city. I ended up doing the biggest clubs, some of the biggest events and started to travel. But I saw myself doing more. I wanted to challenge myself. So i went west. I moved to Phoenix in 2017, networked with DJ John Blaze and worked my way up. In 2021 I joined the world renowned Core DJs, which took my career to the next level. Now i can proudly say I do all types of events on both sides of the country as well as multiple cities. Different countries will be next.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There has been several struggles lol. Pick one! I almost retired twice. Once due to COVID because i didn’t know if i could rebound physically and financially. The other time was a burnout, where you questioned if your impact to the industry mattered. You can add politics, bad business practices by the other party, a car accident, etc. But things will happen. I don’t even think there’s a smooth road in the Wizard Of Oz. What matters is your love for this. What matters is what you are willing to go through to set a mark. Now i can say I have been a DJ for 20 years. I seen practically everything, and I’m still here. With confidence I’m going to be a DJ for the rest of my life. I’ll die doing what I love to do.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My slogan is I Will Not Disappoint Your Ears. I stand by it. I guarantee it. No matter the genre (Hip Hop, Latin, Raboday , Brazilian Funk, Rock & Roll, Bollywood) I’m going to get you dancing and having an amazing time no matter where it is. My transitions and scratching skills are things i get complimented on regularly. The compliment i get most of all is the high energy I display. I host with a loud voice. I’ll get on the dance floor with you. What am I most proud of? The many smiles and compliments i get from all walks of life. The fact that I motivated some djs in this country to embark on their own journeys. The fact that my family is proud of me. And the fact that there are people from the younger generations that want to learn from me. It’s a blessing that the Most High gave me and I’m honored and humbled that I’m living this life.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, NYC. I have two Haitian parents. So the upbringing was real. One thing both my parent taught me is you work for everything you want and need and that nothing is given to you. That built my strong character. When my parents split up i went with Mom and my little brother to Philly. That place is where I lived my young adult years. My confidence was tested, many times but again, it built my confidence within myself. If we are talking interest, Music is #1A Sports is 1B. This is voyagePhoenix so my teams won’t make your readers smile.
