Rising Stars: Meet Mario Monstree of Phoenix / Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mario Monstree.

Hi Mario, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young writer in elementary school, I quickly found a deep appreciation for music with the likes of Evanescence, Britney Spears & Linkin Park at my fingertips. I was obsessed with the concept of putting bodies of musical work into an album which essentially is an auditory experience of a book or a fantasy. Fast forward to a little after high school, with my name I have already created since my early MySpace page, “Mario Monstree (pronounced Monster)”, I finally took that shot into the music scene and began my career as an alternative rapper performing underground shows in the metropolitan Phoenix area. I was bouncing back and forth on whether to pursue my dream in filmmaking or music but i decided music was my calling at first. My most important mission in my art is storytelling, so they’ll eventually collide.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been an easy road although I have always had the support from both family, friends & even fellow colleagues in the music scene. I would say the actual hurdles that made an impact was truly finding the funds to invest in either music projects such as videos, beat leases, dancers and anything that is of cost for production. Also during the shutdown in 2020, as any other independent musician I knew, had to ask themselves some serious questions on whether this career would ever be plausible again. I am truly blessed to be still actively pursuing this dream of mine, although the economy itself is the biggest beast. Even with 2 part time jobs and 3 side hustles.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My specific genre I’d like to call is “Demon Pop”, a phrase a friend actually came up with while listening to one of my earlier demos.
I love to blend pop, hip-hop & dance elements with horror and folklore lyrics, as I am the biggest horror fan I know.
That genre has always excited me and even the musical compositions that coincide with it are truly some of my favorite pieces of art, for example, The Ring Soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. The atmosphere and world building put into that work was groundbreaking for me as a young listener.
What I want to bring to the table and hopefully helps me stand out is truly, my way of storytelling. To invoke emotion and create dialogue with any piece of art I produce. Because to me that’s my go to entertainment, anything that can move me and have me asking questions.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Truly the content and stories that I’m writing. I was always a writer first, any other talent second. That gift I believe is something special and I will continue to learn skills and any other knowledge to help me share those stories with anybody who’s willing to listen.
‘Till this day, I keep every poem, every knick knack, every gift & every photograph I can of my childhood and so on. As they truly can help bring me to a place and time, where sometimes I forget how imperative it was to me and how I can write about it.
