Today we’d like to introduce you to EMPUT Aka Emily Lopez.
Hi Emily, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, my dad was a DJ for events like weddings and quinceañeras in my hometown of Yuma, AZ. That was my first exposure to mixing music and EDM. At the time, I never thought that was something I could potentially get into myself. However, as I moved away to college, my personal rave/EDM career began.
I attended my first EDM event in downtown Phoenix to see Krewella, about 10 years ago. Fast forward 2023, in between countless music event and divulging myself in the scene, I decided to try mixing for myself. I started off playing house music at local bars but my heart was always set in the heavier bass side of EDM. By stepping out of my comfort zone and playing local show slots, I eventually grew my brand and have now played support for some of the biggest bass artist in the scene like LEVEL UP, Jessica Audiffred and Kill the Noise at venues like Sunbar, The Van Buren, Marquee Theater, and Rawhide Event Center.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The most challenging part of this journey has been putting myself out in front of larger crowds and giving the best set/performance while trying to overcome my own self-doubt. I’m originally a very introverted person, and performing in front of people was a fear I had to face head on. I had developed a sense of imposter syndrome over the years, but I try to remind myself to always give my best and that my best is worth something. To this day, the anxiety, self doubt and fear always builds before a set, but once I start that very first song, it all disappears because I’m doing what I love.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a DJ and aspiring producer in the EDM scene, specifically for bass music. I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to make a name for myself considering the fact that I am a woman in a male dominated industry and genre. My goal is to make way and inspire other women to do the same.

Outside of DJing, I have a 10 year career in the banking industry. I am currently a financial crimes analyst at a large regional financial institution. I like to think I live a double life as a dubstep Hannah Montana with juggling both my music and professional career.
