Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Tam.
Hi Kay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for food, local culture, and storytelling, but I never imagined it would become my full-time career. Based in Arizona, I spend my days discovering everything from hidden neighborhood gems and award-winning restaurants to local events, concerts and unique experiences, helping people find what’s worth exploring across the state.
My journey started unexpectedly in 2020 after I lost my office job. Instead of immediately jumping back into another job, I decided to try something completely different. I had a desire to do something more with my life. I started creating videos on TikTok, experimenting with dance trends and comedy skits simply because I was having fun. Then one restaurant video took off, and everything changed.
That breakthrough sparked my passion for showcasing Arizona’s incredible food scene. As I continued sharing restaurants, local businesses, and events, my audience steadily grew into one of Arizona’s largest food-focused communities, reaching more than 200,000 followers on TikTok and 140,000 followers on Instagram. Today, I’m fortunate to create content full-time, and my goal remains the same: helping people discover great food, support local businesses, and experience everything Arizona has to offer.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many content creators, I had to figure everything out through trial and error. One of the biggest challenges was learning that creating content is only a small part of the job. Running a successful social media business also means learning photography, video editing, SEO, brand partnerships, marketing, analytics, contracts, and running a business.
Another challenge was staying consistent, especially when videos didn’t perform well. Social media is constantly changing, so what works one month may not work the next. I’ve learned that consistency and adapting to new trends are just as important as creativity.
As my audience grew, I also became more intentional about the type of content I create. Rather than simply chasing viral views, I focus on building trust with my audience, supporting local restaurants and businesses, and creating content that provides value long after it’s posted.
Of course, there’s also a lot of driving! The Phoenix metro area is huge, and that’s before heading north to Flagstaff or south to Tucson. I’m always on the road discovering new places, and I do my best every single day because social media never really takes a day off.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart is my genuine excitement for discovering new food and sharing that excitement with other people. I always try to stay positive and approach every restaurant with an open mind. At the same time, I enjoy learning about the history, culture, and traditions behind the dishes because I think those stories make the experience even more meaningful.
I also like keeping my content fresh by mixing different styles of storytelling. Sometimes I’m talking directly to the camera, other times I let the visuals and music tell the story. It really depends on what fits the experience best.
Collaboration is another big part of what I enjoy. Working with restaurants comes naturally, but I also like collaborating with other creators whenever I can. It’s a great way to learn from each other and introduce our audiences to something new.
While food is the heart of my content, it’s not the only thing I’m passionate about. I’ve always loved anime, K-pop, travel, and pop culture, so I enjoy weaving those interests into my content whenever it feels authentic. I think that gives my audience a better sense of who I am beyond just recommending restaurants, while also allowing me to connect with communities that share those same interests.
What’s next?
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing AZFOODGUY while also expanding my travel and lifestyle content through my personal brand, @PowerPlayKay. It’s where I can share my travels, hobbies, and adventures globally, while AZFOODGUY remains focused on discovering the best food, businesses, and events across the state of Arizona. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with more creators, businesses, and tourism organizations. Whether I’m exploring a destination halfway around the world or discovering something new here in Arizona, my goal is always the same: to inspire people to get out, try something new, and have a lot of fun.
